There's nothing new under the sun...
Stereoscope stereos: solid, skopein: to view.
This instrument was invented by Sir Charles Wheatstone in 1838, with the separate pictures being reflected in mirrors.

The open stereoscope, such as depicted at right, is attributed to O.W.Holmes in 1861.

The advertisement at right was in the 1953 edition of Phœnix, the magazine of Parramatta High School.
