Olympic Athlete

Parramatta High School’s only known Olympic representative was David McKenzie. David was a state, national and international fencing champion (foil).

David represented Australia at the Melbourne 1956, Rome 1960 and Tokyo 1964 games. He was an official at the Mexico 1968 games and was elected in 1974 as Australia’s IOC representative making a significant contribution until his death in 1981.

David served as Chairman of both the Australia Sports Council and Oceania Fencing Confederation, President of the Australian Amateur Fencing Federation, Vice Chairman of the NSW Olympic Council and Vice President of the AOF.

In addition to his Olympic involvement, David was a founding member of the NSW Youth Advisory Council, a lawyer and member of the Law Society of NSW.

For the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the Australian Olympic Committee presented David McKenzie Memorial Olympic flags to a number of major venues for the games in honour of his work for the Olympic movement.

The DH McKenzie Memorial Tournament is held each year and is a major event on the Australian Fencing Federation's competition calendar.

Adrian was an outstanding track and field athlete winning at school, district, state and national levels. Tragically he developed a sore throat just days before the team was due to leave for Germany. The team doctor declared him unfit and he was dropped from the team. It was a terrible disappointment. He continued with athletics even after joining the NSW Police Force and won many medals in police games.
