Like his father and brother before him, John proved to be an outstanding cricketer.

In 1960, John was captain of the First XI and these comments were recorded about him in the school magazine - Phoenix - of that year.

John's flair for captaincy in those early days stood him in good stead. He went on to captain NSW and is currently NSW Chairman of Selectors.
