Winton excelled in his studies and gained first place in the Intermediate Certificate of 1927. He was Dux of the School in 1929 and with a scholarship of 50 pounds from the Rotary Club of Parramatta attended Sydney University to study Medicine.

Now in his 87th year, Dr Winton has recently published his memoirs. The book titled Johnny-Head-in-the-Air:Memoirs of a Doctor/Journalist recounts his many experiences as a doctor and includes his encounter with a young - and badly wounded - Roden Cutler.
