Safety in Industrial Arts
(or: "What did Hizzoner Say?")

In late March 2002 the Sydney Daily Telegraph ran the following piece:

Tele, March 2002

"...Chief Industrial Magistrate George Miller said those under 18 needed a certificate to use dangerous factory equipment." (my emphasis)
A traumatic and unpleasant experience for the child involved, to be sure, but what are we Industrial Arts teachers to make of this pronouncement from the bench?
  • What is this "certificate" to which Hizzonner refers?
  • Are we IA teachers authorised to administer and award such a certificate?
  • Are our safety tests a satisfactory alternative?
  • Is the bandsaw really a piece of "dangerous factory equipment"?
  • What are the implications for Industrial Arts and power tools?
We must not let this become an excuse to downgrade Industrial Arts in NSW public schools.
Talk to me, J.Ralph, or just stay tuned for updates. (28/3/02)
